How We Met:
It was a bright Saturday morning in June and the first thing I saw, after wiping the crust from the corner of my eyes, was a DM in my Facebook inbox. “Wow, these guys start early,” I thought to myself. “I didn’t even eat breakfast yet and I’m already getting messages.” I tried glancing at the messenger’s profile picture to see if I could recognize him without clicking to open the actual message.
Side note: I hate these apps that let you see when a person reads your sent messages. What a set up!
His profile picture didn’t look familiar and I could only read the first few words from his message.
Who did I know? What was it about knowing this mutual person that made this conversation ‘lol’ worthy? I had questions for this early DM intruder so I decided to reply (see messages below).
After a few days had past, I received another message from the DM intruder Scott Morris asking if I would be interested in being a judge for an upcoming artist showcase that he was putting together called The Dean’s List Tour. Let me just start off by saying that I’ve gotten quite a few offers to participate or partner with a few artist showcases throughout the tri-state area. I’ve heard the same pitch over and over again where, to me, it just seemed like another opportunity for these promoters to cash out on young artists who are just looking for their next big break. I love discovering new talent, but most importantly, I love creating new opportunities for them.
That being said, I didn’t get that vibe from Scott. In fact, after telling me more about his vision and goals for the tour, I was very much impressed by the level of thought and sacrifice that Scott and his team were putting into creating life changing experiences for these aspiring artists.
I had the pleasure of meeting Scott on the day of the auditions which took place at the Funkadelic studios in Manhattan.
Things were a little hectic that day, as Scott had already forewarned me would happen. There were artists rehearsing their sets in the halls, runners with clipboards directing talent and judges to their set rooms, and then there was Scott who, amidst all of the hustle and bustle, kept a calm, cool and collected aura to him. I wasn’t sure if it was his pilgrim hat or what but this guy was cool in my book (if you know Scott, then you know that him and his hat are one).
Over the years, Scott and I have managed to maintain a positive and propelling relationship in both the personal and professional space. I’ve hosted a few of The Dean’s Lists showcases, he’s pitched a few of his clients to appear on my web-show and we’ve kept each other abreast of any events/ happenings taking place that we feel the other could benefit from. Even if I don’t hear from Scott for some time (as what tends to happen due to our busy schedules and life) I can always count on him to have an uplifting word of encouragement waiting for me once we connect again.
Scott is truly one of a kind. He’s a visionary, a leader, a business man, artist himself (ask him to spit something for you when you see him), and a student when the opportunity calls for it. I’ve been blessed enough to witness him launch, not one, not two, but about 5 different companies and counting within the 4 years that I’ve known him – Dean’s List Tour, Mor.Bookings Agency, Morvalue Entertainment, and Daze Summit.
So I hope that you all really take this opportunity to meet Scott. He’s a true mogul in the making.
